A scientifically literate public is crucial if we are to overcome the challenges we face in the future. Science is not a collection of facts, but a process. Students learn science best through hands-on activities and investigations. Help me provide my students with experiences that will help them.
Cowboys and cowgirls still exist.
My students attend a small rural district in eastern Washington State. Some live in town but most are farm kids. They are accustomed to long days of hard work taking care of cattle and tending to the crops. And, yes some compete in rodeos: barrel racing, roping and bronco riding. Total enrollment for the district is about 100 students in grades K-12. The school serves families from a range of economic backgrounds. Some come from comparatively wealthy families, while many others live in poverty that is hard to imagine. Because the local economy is based in agriculture, employment is limited; 40% of students are eligible for free or reduced meals.
My Project
Accurate data collection is essential to doing good scientific investigations. We have a set of Vernier probes that was generously donated by another science teacher. They can be used to accurately measure and track temperature, pH, and dissolved gases over time. However they are designed to be used with Texas Instruments graphing calculators. Though I intend to use the probes and calculators with several of my classes, I am especially excited about their application in chemistry. With these calculators we will be able to help test water quality, do acid/base titrations, conduct experiments in thermochemistry and much more.
It is my goal to use science to broaden my students' understanding of the world and their place in it.
With your generous help we can continue to provide students with experiences that make science interesting and exciting. Thank you for supporting science in our schools.
