I have been blessed with the opportunity to be part of the lives of some of the most talented young people in Oakland. I work with a diverse cast of young scholars with backgrounds from all over the world. Newcomers from many areas leave our demographics at 39% Asian, 38% African American, & 21% Hispanic and make cultural competency and community values strengths at my school.
The students are creative, interested in the world around them, and intensely curious about their futures.
I have noticed in them that they have an organic respect and appreciation of adults who they interact with. I have also noticed that the unique barriers to education that each student negotiates are part of what makes these scholars and their success so special.
My Project
Most students are not able to buy themselves graphing calculators. However, many are in math and science classes where graphing calculators are necessary. Please help my students pass their exams, AP tests, and standardized tests by buying them a class set of graphing calculators. This will not only benefit my AP students, but my regular chemistry students as well. For so many tests and activities, having a reliable scientific calculator is mandatory. In addition, this will provide them with calculators to sign out for major tests, such as the SAT. For my juniors, accessing these basic resources is so important to their success in high school and in college afterwards, and your donation would make a huge impact on their ability to succeed.
In addition, having access to a reliable tablet, such as the Microsoft Surface, that connects to the projector will allow students to create and manipulate diagrams for the entire class.
This will help students who are visual learners or students with learning differences to access complex material in Chemistry and AP Chemistry by allowing them to interact with the material and help them to visualize and understand these very abstract topics that they will be asked to remember for the AP exam.
