One of my biggest concerns is making sure that my students are prepared to achieve their dreams of higher education. I teach a course that helps students complete their math prerequisites for the university. The calculators will provide low income students the opportunity to access course content.
I have amazing students from diverse backgrounds in culture, preparedness, and resources.
From the students who have traditionally struggled with math to AP students, they share one common bond. They all have a dream to attend a university.
Some students are special education students who through hard work, countless hours of tutoring, and sheer will have been able to overcome their limitations to become top performers in the classroom. I am proud of their accomplishments and feel that they deserve every chance to achieve at their highest level of ability.
While many students are middle class students who can afford resources such as calculators, others have limited resources. The economy has been difficult for many families, with parents losing employment. Providing classroom materials is often difficult for them.
My Project
I am requesting 1 Ti 30XIIS teacher kit of scientific calculators for Algebra II and Math Analysis. I would like to use these calculators to help the students access the required course curriculum for Algebra II and beyond. They need calculators to work with more advanced concepts such as continuously compounded interest and logarithms.
Scientific calculators are an expectation for students who are in higher levels of math and science. A student's lack of funds should not be a barrier for access to college prep level classes. These calculators will allow our students with the least resources to access the same coursework as their peers.
I would like to use these 10 calculators to begin a lending program that would allow students to check out calculators from the library for the year.
This way, the students will be able to use them at home for homework and in their other classes, such as Chemistry. Many of our more impoverished students try to make due without this necessary resource and their grades, and educational opportunities, suffer. This will put them on a more level playing field with their peers.
