My Students

A typical day in my classroom is not typical. Every day the students have no idea how they are going to learn. I like to reach all learners through a variety of methods. I also like to use real-life experiences so that the students can connect to the Math and find it relevant.

They leave excited!

My students range from ages 9-12. There are white, black, and Hispanic students. My school consists of 5th and 6th grade in a small town where the main industry is furniture factories. We have approximately 350 students. We have a very high free and reduced-price lunch population.

My Project

6th-grade students are allowed to use a basic calculator. We introduce students to integers as well as a basic foundation for Algebra. With the use of calculators, students are able to focus on the main learning points instead of worrying over careless calculation mistakes. The calculator helps them to check over their work while building confidence in students that never believed they were really good at math. I have noticed a huge difference in the past with the inclusion students Math knowledge. Often times they know what to do but get caught up in the calculations. With the use of the calculator, they are able to follow the steps in their problem while building self-confidence that they can also be good at math!
