Calculators are fascinating tools and can be very helpful in the Math classroom. The problem is good calculators are hard to come by and I can't expect my students to spend $100 each to get one.
Texas Instruments makes a wonderful calculator specifically designed for middle school Math. It is the TI-73 explorer. It can be used for functions from fractions through pre-algebra. Other features it presents are:

A classroom set of these calculators would greatly enhance my students' understanding of difficult concepts, and it will also show them concepts, such as graphing on a calculator, that they will need to use further along in their school careers. Taking the guess work out of simple problems and facilitating them in more difficult problems is a recipe for success in the Math classroom. The added bonus to these calculators is they last a very long time. These will not only benefit my students this year, but students for years to come, helping to impact hundreds, even thousands, of children.
My school is one that has been impacted by Hurricane Katrina and funds are tight. We don't really have the necessary funds to purchase a classroom set of the TI-73 explorer calculators. I would really like to provide my students with the opportunity to integrate a little more technology into their lessons and for them to benefit from seeing how problems work out on a larger display. I believe this will clarify many of the questions they have and also spark some enthusiasm in what can be mundane. It is always exciting to see a graph appear across the screen of the calculator.
