This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students can do Algebra, what they need help with is the arithmetic.

My students come from a rural neighborhood and are bussed in from all over the district.

The majority of my students are freshmen. They have me for two one hour blocks. The first hour is math support where they are taught the skills that are needed to pass their second block class, which is Algebra 1.

My Project

The aid of calculators will help students better learn Algebra through the use of the calculator which is used to help scaffold the students through the arithmetic side of algebra. I've found that the reason students fail Algebra is not because of the Algebra concepts but because they are weak at arithmetic.

Algebra 1 is the gateway to success in high school.

Students need algebra to graduate. They need algebra as one of their core requirements to get into college. However, I've found that most students have difficulty with algebra because they are so week at arithmetic. The calculator, if used judiciously, can help level the playing field and enable my students to pass algebra.
