Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mathematicians. They question the world around them, develop new ideas, and are learning how to advocate for themselves. My students are eager to learn, understand, and to create change. With access to the appropriate resources, loving encouragement, and opportunities for engagement, all of my students thrive. When they have the opportunity to engage in 21st Century mathematics learning they are preparing themselves for the bright, successful futures that every single one of them deserve.
Approximately 95% of our school’s students come from low income backgrounds.
90% receive free or reduced lunch. 98% identify as coming from a minority group. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures that need to be celebrated. Our school provides our students with the opportunity to celebrate who they are. We are an innovative turn-around school filled with students that deserve to have all of their dreams at the tips of their fingers. We are a school filled with love. We are strong in our belief that every student has what it takes to succeed. We are committed to helping our students become 100% college and job ready. We are a family.
My Project
Multiple 6th grade math standards in both the ratios and proportions and number sense units require calculators. Currently, we do not have a classroom set of calculators so mastering the standards that require them for calculations is very difficult.
A classroom set of calculators would enable my students to get valuable practice utilizing calculators to complete rate tables, calculate percentages, and find unit rates.
This practice will help prepare them for state standardized testing in a few months where they will be required to use calculators on the exams. Please help my students get the practice they need to ace the tests and show everyone that they've mastered the 6th grade math standards!
