Teacher Friel from Philadelphia PA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to be able to connect to the algebra. Mathematics is very difficult for a lot of students, but with the use of graphing calculators, seemingly abstract ideas can come to life.

My classroom consists of students who did not prosper in the typical classrooms of the School District of Philadelphia. Our school is located in North Philadelphia and serves students from all around the city. Students choose to attend our school because it is a safe and empowering environment.
My students are incredibly talented and hardworking individuals, yet the majority of them cannot afford the calculators that are needed in higher level mathematics courses.
As I work to teach basic live skills such as reasoning, problem solving, and persistence in my Algebra 2 class, my students need to be provided with the tools and opportunities that many take for granted.
During my time teaching in Philadelphia, I have realized that although calculators are a basic tool in most high school math classrooms, they are not readily available to my students. The calculators that my higher mathematics courses require are very expensive, and very few families can afford the cost.
My students need calculators to perform the mathematics in my class, but they also need experience using the calculators so that they can be successful on statewide and college admissions tests.
Last school year, my students had limited access to calculators, and this put them at a disadvantage throughout the school year as well as during state testing.
