Help me give my students a TI - 84 Plus CE Graphing Calculator to complete our class set of 20. My students also need Expo Dry Erase markers to solve math problems together at our new activity tables.
My students attend a low SES school in a rural area of West Virginia. A declining and aging population means fewer funds for pubic education.
My students are high achieving 11th and 12th graders studying Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, and AP Calculus.
They are excited about mathematics and science, and they plan to attend college to pursue careers in STEM fields. Having access to the latest technology allows them to compete on a level field with students from more affluent areas.
My Project
I want the West Virginia students in my Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, and AP Calculus classes to have every advantage. I know that for success in STEM fields, they must have a solid conceptual understanding of advanced mathematical concepts and be able to connect mathematical concepts to solve application problems.
Technology is an integral part of the mathematical problem solving process of exploration, solution, and communication.
The TI-84 Plus CE Graphing Calculators allow my students to use multiple approaches to solve problems and examine functions graphically, numerically, and analytically. My students also demonstrate their understanding by explaining their solution within the given context in writing. The calculator funded by this project will bring our classroom total up to 20 graphing calculators.
My students also need new Expo dry erase markers. The students use the markers at their tables with individual whiteboards to work out problems with their table partners and learn new concepts.
