Calculating Probability Of Academic Excellence = 100%
My students need calculators to even the playing field in their computation skills and white boards to encourage interactive learning and gain confidence.
My students, though they are on average, four grades behind grade level, will be high school ready at the end of this year. By continuing to gain confidence in math and creating supportive relationships, I am positive we are climbing the ladder of success!
My students are all identified as having a learning disability among many other reasons to have an IEP, yet are some of the hardest working and invested students I have met.
While we have our times of difficulty, we are learning how grit and perseverance, as well as becoming advocates for ourselves, will take us anywhere we want to go.
Though their environment has stacked almost all the odds against them, I am encouraged and confident my students will do anything and everything they want with their lives.
I am reminded every day how beautifully different my students are and am inspired by the way they think, interact, and dream!
My Project
Imagine being in an extremely noisy environment and having to take the biggest test of your life; or reading a book or newspaper and having no idea what you're reading. To solve these "issues", we would move ourselves to a quieter place or listen to the news on the radio. These are examples of modifications and accommodations that we use on a daily basis.
Most (if not all) of my students would greatly benefit from the use of a calculator for computation skills as an accommodation. While my students can solve math problems, using a calculator will help them be able to compete on an even playing field.
My classes are also much smaller and very interactive, and white boards will allow my students not only to compete in friendly competition, but to also be engaged in learning and practice their math skills. We use the giant white boards in class all the time, but having individual boards will be beneficial for them to also use as a space to figure math problems out during class.
Your donation will not only help even the playing field for my students who have labeled as "different", but it will also show them the power of paying it forward.
While most of my students live a life drastically different than my own growing up, I know that paying it forward knows no bounds across lines of difference. We are on time, on track, and on a mission to academic excellence- high school and college ready!
