Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second year Math Fellow teaching at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx where 91% of our students qualify for free lunch. We have nearly 5000 students with scattered schedules as the building is too small to accommodate such a large number. My classes typically have between 28 and 34 students. Technological resources are scarce, which is the purpose of this proposal.
I recently completed Texas Instruments training where I affirmed how valuable function machines, also known as graphing calculators, are in a mathematics classroom. This generation of students has been raised on video games, computers and the like. "Chalk and talk" does not inspire learning for these young people. When I introduce applications of the calculator into a lesson, the students' eyes light up as their visual and technological minds are stimulated. Graphing histograms or solving equations becomes a fun game instead of tedious paperwork. I have seen how beneficial technology is to their educational experience.
The "TI-83/84 plus" is the calculator approved to be used for the Regents Examinations, cumulative standardized tests required for graduation. It is difficult for students to practice and familiarize themselves with this technology as they cannot afford to buy their own. I would like to have a class set (25) of "TI-84 plus" calculators to use with my students in class.
This technology truly empowers and motivates my students. It is difficult to elicit excitement about math with a packed class of 34 students. They do not yet realize the importance of understanding mathematics at such a young age. These calculators reinvigorate their learning experience.
