My students need to learn and experience the importance of fitness. Four fitness trackers would be a fun and engaging way of monitoring their own progress.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As middle schoolers, in addition to academics, we learn about living a healthy lifestyle. We try to complete one fitness activity a day. We walk around the field and keep track of our laps. We complete the Fitbit 7 minute workout two times per week and we try out simple, but healthy, recipes.
My students have multiple disabilities.
In addition to learning challenges, many students have behavioral challenges and communication challenges. Trying new activities, especially physical activities, can be very difficult.
Several times a week, we walk around our field. To connect this to our math curriculum, we count our laps and keep a chart of each student's progress. The students are encouraged by this and motivated to complete their laps. If we had Fitbit Zip monitors for each student, we would be able to monitor their individual progress while learning about counting, numbers and distances. They will be able to graph their steps and miles to keep a record of their weekly progress.
My Project
With a Fitbit zip, students will be able to count their steps during the school day and keep track of the distances they walk. They will learn to create and interpret charts and graphs while recording their accomplishments. We can use the data to learn numbers and place value. We will learn to compare numbers as well as distances.
The best part of this project is that students will learn to integrate fitness into their lives in a fun and meaningful way.
Research shows that the brain becomes more actively engaged when there is movement involved with learning activities.
To give my students the best chance at learning, being healthy and being engaged, please consider this project.
Help me teach my students that physical fitness is important in their lives and we will have the data to prove it!
