My Students
My students come in a wide variety - from 9th graders who are honors students down to those with much lower abilities, several of whom are well off grade level. Math does not come easily to many of them as it is our lowest performing subject. Often doing without, we're from a small place in central Werst Virginia where budget concerns have hit hard just like the rest of the nation. We're very proud though, because our school received an "A" rating!
My Project
While I have some calculators in my classroom, I am in desperate need of some more. Calculators are one of the essential needs in an Algebra math class. Students are quick to grab one because they know how beneficial they are to them. If we can get more, everyone will have the same opportunity in math class, as all of them will have one to complete their work. Surprisingly, students do not come to class with basics such as paper, pencils, and binders, so a personal calculator purchase is very rare.
Basic math facts do not come easy for many students, especially those with special needs.
The calculator can help them solve more difficult problems yet aid them in basic calculations. This allows students to be more successful in Algebra class.
