Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach special education kindergarten in a very low-income, high-needs school in the Bronx. While my 23 students are excited about school and actively learning, our classroom supplies are very limited. One essential need that we have is calculators. Calculators are engaging, necessary tools that my students can use to reinforce basic adding and subtracting skills. They also love to use the calculators when we are able to borrow them from other classrooms, and that love and excitement translates into better learning. If we could have a classroom set of calculators, I could use them daily with some of my special-needs students who are unable to write their numbers. I would also be able to have them available in the classroom for free-time math use, something that the students would love, but which is not possible when I have to try to borrow from other teachers. I am also asking for an overhead calculator of the same model as the classroom calculators. Using this overhead calculator will make it easier for me to teach my visual learners about using the calculator, and allow me to do demonstrations for the entire class at once. My school cannot afford to order calculators for us. Please help me give my students the same materials that other students have, and open a new door to math success for them. Kindergarten is where the basic skills are taught and developed, and my students are missing a tool that could help them achieve. We need your help!
