My Students

My students are an amazing group of young people who are especially passionate about the arts and music. In NYC, which is the most segregated public school system in America, our school is a beautiful anomaly, in that we have a student body that is socio-economically, racially, and ethnically diverse.

Part of this diversity, however, is a great difference in familial financial support.

While many of our students are in higher SES families with middle and upper incomes, 1/3 of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program, which is an indicator for being in families facing financial difficulty. As a result, in each of my classes, around 10 of my students consistently do not have access to a graphing calculator. This creates a huge equity issue, where only some students are able to gain familiarity with the graphing calculator.

My Project

Please help my Algebra 2 students access graphing calculators for our classwork! One third of my school's student are on the free and reduced lunch program due to family income and so many of my students can't afford a graphing calculator.

My students would greatly benefit from gaining familiarity with graphing calculators as they advance on their mathematical journeys.

They could also become better prepared for the SAT/ACT if they had the proper equipment.

Our math department wants to build a consistent, modern calculator collection so that students can learn mathematics without learning a new calculator based on which teacher they have, or what subject they are in. Calculators can have major differences in key locations, menu options, and even in the formatting of expressions. We want to eliminate the distractions and teach high quality mathematics.
