My Students

Kindergarten through fifth graders come to the music room twice a week to sing, dance and play instruments. About 300 students at our K-8 school are members of an International Baccalaureate school where students are engaged in active Inquiry.

In the music room Inquiry looks like students exploring melody, harmony and rhythm on the instruments.

Students Inquire how rhythm patterns work together with melody. We explore how harmony supports melody and rhythm. Above all, we make a lot of joyful music together.

My Project

This is an amazing string teaching residency for students in grades K-5 with the objective to learn traditional fiddle techniques. Kelly Thibodeaux of Etouffee, originally from Louisianna, is a professional fiddler, songwriter and performer of Cajun folk music.

In just two days, students will learn bowing and fingering techniques to produce sound effects to musically illustrate short stories from the Cajun tradition as led by instructor Kelly Thibodeaux (Etouffe).

Violins (fiddles) will be provided for each student during the two day residency so that they may practice and experience how to hold a violin and bow. Students will learn traditional fiddle bowing techniques and finger placements to create music and tell stories with the instructor.
