In my class, I use community group sessions to foster a love of the music, provide hands on experience to make music more approachable and encourage movement to stimulate the mind as well as the body. The more time that the students spend in their group setting, the more they enjoy it! The more they approach the instruments independently, the more they feel confident to create on their own with those instruments and the more that I move with them in class, the more they love spending time in music!
My Project
These drums will help aid in imagination to their story songs and community group settings! Story songs use instruments to help create the sound effects that aid in imagining the full scene. It helps the students create a sense of wonder and sparks creativity.
Not only will the drums help with creativity, but they will also help students work hands on with learning rhythms from basic level understanding to advanced difficulty.
Teaching rhythms with drums also fosters the hands-on approach while giving students the opportunity to move and occupy their nervous energy while learning. Students who have something to do physically while learning a specific standard tend to understand easier when it is applied! I will have manipulative activities that go with our drums so that they can see how to group rhythms and work together to create their own creative rhythm story that will accompany the books and songs!
