Caffeine: The Gateway to Student Independence and Independent Living Skills
My students need cookbooks, gloves, coffee, cups and creamer to operate a coffee and breakfast bar, serving school employees, in order to gain the skills necessary to be successful and productive individuals in today's world.
The students I serve receive educational and therapeutic services within a separate classroom in a general education public school setting using a modified curriculum. This classroom is comprised of students with significant disABILITIES that range from a variety of medical conditions, including Down’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Intellectual Disability (ID).
Many of these students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and attend a Title I Middle School in Florida, that provides free lunch and breakfast to all students.
In addition to these students being identified as having medical and educational diagnoses, many of these students also present with varying degrees of communication disorders (i.e., receptive and/or expressive language impairment, speech impairment, pragmatic language impairment, etc.). Each day, these students come to school with smiling faces and positive attitudes eager and determined to learn. Our students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds with varying degrees of abilities, which challenges us to be creative and thoughtful in how we meet their needs.
My Project
Through the creation of the Big Dawg Cafe, we will be able to provide various opportunities for our students to practice and master essential social and life skills that are often left out of their modified curriculum, while also targeting important academic skills.
Creating the Big Dawg Cafe will enable our students to gain some experience in a business environment where they can practice those skills required to be successful and productive in our society.
Our students will participate in hands-on activities to gain employment, such as completing job applications and interviews, to obtain "employment" in a variety of positions at the Big Dawg Cafe. Through these first-hand experiences, students will be exposed to the skills necessary for handling money, counting inventory, baking, ordering supplies and providing good customer services, all while working as a group to support a successful and efficient business.
Additionally, these opportunities will also allow us to address underlying social-emotional and interpersonal skills through exposure to positive and safe social interactions with teachers and staff. Many of our students need explicit, concrete instruction with these skills in order to be good communicators, students, and employees.
Requested supplies will go towards helping us get the Big Dawg Cafe up and running. We need muffin pans and cups to help us make different types of muffins we will make from the cook books we've requested. No one likes really likes mornings without coffee, so we need creamer, coffee and coffee cups to help get us started. We already have a Keurig and we don't want our wonderful staff to waste precious time standing in line waiting on K-cups, so we've requested the coffee carafes to help save time. We hope to sustain our cafe with the profits made from our initial supplies! So, thanks for your investment!
