This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach history in a Title I, inner-city school with very limited resources. With around 750 students, the majority of students are on free or reduced price lunch. My students are extremely creative, intelligent, and charismatic. They constantly amaze me with how much they can do with so little. My school is a burgeoning atmosphere of diversity. With a demographic population of around forty-nine percent Latino, forty-nine percent African-American, and two percent White, my school is a beacon of cultural and ethnic diversity. I service a plethora of English language learners and exceptional education students. A lack of ELL resources, technology, and materials hinder my students from reaching their full potential on a daily basis.
My Project
I teach in a Title I school in Richmond, Virginia. In neighboring districts, schools are in pristine shape! That is not necessarily the case at my school. There are sometimes unwanted creatures and students often grumble about the destitute nature of their school. I want to give students a classroom and space that is welcoming despite the downfalls and also feels like their own.
Due to all of this, I want my students to have access to their own exciting classroom safe haven, Cafe Historia!
In addition, my students are often not motivated by punishment for their ill-behaviors (which are often informed by personal traumas). However, they love to feel special and are highly motivated by incentives. By creating a classroom cafe using this furniture, coffee supplies, and decor, my students will feel more at home in my classroom!
