My Students

Our students come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. One factor that unites our student body is a commitment to our district's #bekind initiative. Five years ago, I became the advisor of our school's Kindness Club, which is comprised of 6th-8th grade students who are passionate about spreading positivity and love in a world where intolerance and hate have become far too present. Students in Kindness Club are constantly coming up with ways to put smiles on the faces of their peers and teachers.

The teachers at our school seek to create a safe, welcoming environment for the students we teach.

We want our students to be independent thinkers, dreamers, and change-makers. To that end, we focus heavily on collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.

My Project

Kindness Rocks! will help my students to spread the word about kindness, not only on our school campus, but also all around our town. Some of the funds raised through Donors Choose will be used to purchase the actual garden rocks that my students will decorate. In addition to the rocks themselves, we'll need to purchase materials to prime the rocks so that they're weatherproof and able to withstand the test of time. After researching other towns' rock painting initiatives, I determined that the best way to decorate the rocks would be with paint markers, so I'll also need to purchase lots of them, in lots of colors! Paint pens will allow students to be more detailed with their decorating, and they'll also (hopefully) be less messy! Once students have painted all of the rocks, we'll use a sealant to make sure that the designs stay vibrant.

As students enter our school each day, they'll pass by a border of Kindness Rocks, and they'll be reminded to be kind, embrace who they are, and share a smile with someone!

Our Kindness Rocks will offer students and community members both encouragement as they start their day and inspiration to do great things after the school day is over!

To kick off our project, students will be invited to a rock painting party, where they'll be taught the process for painting rocks and given some suggested messages to write. Then they can let their imaginations run wild, and create kindness rocks of all shapes and sizes! Once the rocks have had time to dry and set, we'll go on a "rock drop," where students will lay these inspiring rocks around the school campus and surrounding community.
