Help me give my students math manipulatives for fractions, decimals and percents in addition to basic classroom supplies such as pencils, pencil sharpeners, highlighters, copy paper, manila folders, and a laminating machine to preserve reference materials.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are ready and willing to take on the challenges of STEM content. They have many diverse styles of learning and need to experience STEM curriculum beyond the traditional lecture. They need exposure to 21st century learning resources and hands-on materials. They need to collaborate with their peers and learn how to take the lead during STEM topic discourse. Research has shown that long-term memory is enhanced through simulations of the real experiences. Let's give them real world experiences in STEM!
We are 95% African-American, 2% Haitian-American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is located in the inner city of Miami, Florida. Although, our students are faced with many socioeconomic challenges, they seek a high quality education to become productive citizens.
My Project
We are committed to equipping our students for STEM by building a solid foundation in mathematics. More hands-on manipulatives are needed to ensure our students master and retain key math concepts necessary for real-world STEM activities. All of these resources will help our students build conceptual understanding and procedural knowledge in both the why and how of foundation math topics.
The math manipulatives for fractions, decimals and percents will aid our third, fourth and fifth graders with building fluency in numbers, operations, and fractions.
Our primary students will master the Common Core mathematics curriculum with the supplemental workbooks and arithmetic small group center manipulatives. The pencils, dry erase markers, highlighters, and electric sharpeners will ensure that our students are ready to learn upon arrival.
