Our quaint school is nestled in the canyons, just outside of the city. We come from diverse backgrounds and cultures and, therefore, have a variety of educational needs. Our K-6 school has such a positive climate, and all students work on displaying a CARE-ing attitude (Courtesy, Achievement, and Responsibility).
The Kindergarteners eagerly arrive at school daily ready for hands-on learning.
This year, my scholars are working on using higher academic vocabulary and taking ownership of their learning. We are embracing the Common Core philosophy of collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.
My Project
Teaching empathy, mindfulness, and kindness can be best taught using books. Each week, I focus on a character trait to teach my class. We typically start off with a story, then brainstorm ways to show that trait both at home and in the classroom. Students are able to relate to and connect with the trait when presented with engaging characters and delightful illustrations. Many of these social stories I have chosen are from the same book series. Therefore, the characters are recognizable and offer students appropriate language to deal with their big emotions.
These books will be used as a springboard for countless discussions and teaching our youngest learners about emotions and positive character traits.
Books such as Positive Ninja and Perfect Ninja will be used during lessons of perseverance and growth mindset. Then, we will chart ways to show perseverance, role play, write about, and practice on the playground. I will also give special certificates to kiddos who display these traits. Having these unique and special books in my Kindergarten class will help me connect with my students on a deeper level and will help students navigate their life in this big world.
