My students need headphones for accessing online learning/testing and bean bag chairs to create our reading lounge used to encourage independent reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." Socrates said that over 2,000 years ago and those words still ring true for the 31 sixth graders I have the privilege of teaching every day.
Each day, my students come in ready to try a little more, do a little more and learn a little more than they did the day before.
They are 31 unique individuals, but together we form "Byerson Nation" (a name given to us for not only our "healthy" class size but the way we carry and represent ourselves as a class). Despite some of the challenges they face on as students in the heart of Baltimore, I still see the spark of learning kindling in each of them on a daily basis. Bottom line...these kids are awesome!
My Project
In our classroom, we are working to develop a love for reading. My students have approximately 20 minutes a day to engage in independent reading with a book of their choice and interest. We have an area designated as a "reading lounge", but it is currently empty. The goal of the bean bags would be to create a more relaxed environment for students to spread out a little more and really enjoy the act of reading. The mere sight of these "cool" bean bags in our classroom would create an even bigger excitement about our "D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Time!
The headphones requested would become a class set used during district/state testing that require them. More importantly, headphones would be extremely helpful during our time in the computer lab as they could listen to different videos and lessons to help support their learning. Currently without them, some of my students are unable to access the material as well as others. Headphones are essential to making sure everyone learns.
By donating these items to "Byerson Nation", my students will be able to access educational content more consistently, perform better on district and state tests, read more and as a whole, learn more.
They'll be able to watch and listen to videos/recordings with the headphones and enjoy the act of reading even more with the bean bag chairs.
The addition of these items to our class will get us one step closer to kindling the flame inside each and every one of my kids. Thank You!
