Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

First Grade Library: Perfect Books Needed

My students need (Levels A-J) for their classroom library.

My students are sweet, energetic, curious learners and have the ability to explore the world within their classroom. This year we are implementing a DEAR (drop everything and read) reading time. This is where students independently read books based on their reading level. This will be done in the afternoon before they go to centers. This practice helps students to develop a love for reading while developing reading habitats which will allow them to improve their reading level and become lifelong learners.

I teach in a rural area with students coming from various backgrounds. 100% of the school’s population receives free meals. School uniforms are often donated for some students. My first grade students are very excited and eager to improve their reading skills and continue to develop their love for reading. They even attempt to read books that are above their level this shows how eager they are to read. We do not have sufficient reading books which correspond with students reading level in our classroom library. Hence, I am asking for Leveled A-J books.

My Project

Once per week my students will select books from the classroom library based on their reading level and interests. They will place these books in their book basket and read them daily at “DEAR” (drop everything and read) reading time. These books will be on students reading level so they will be able to read independently. Students will also read these leveled books to a partner in centers. This will allow the students to improve their reading skills, become more confident readers, and develop their sight words vocabulary and reading comprehension skill.

By providing students with the perfect leveled books to meet their needs, students will develop the necessary skills to be literate.

The ability to read is the most crucial aspect in educating a child. If a student is able to read competently this will lend itself to the student excelling in all areas of their academic life. These books will also increase the joy of reading because they are on their level and they are able to read them proficiently.
