Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse community of learners that are learning to collaborate as musicians in an urban environment. We are fortunate to be in a school that supports the arts as part of a balanced curriculum. However, many of my students come from low income families and purchasing instruments for a student may not be on their highest priority.
My students love to create, dance, and sing.
They enjoy moving and responding to music in their own unique ways. Given the tools they need, they will become audience members, performers, and composers.
My Project
This year I began at a new school. My students are excited to begin learning piano in class. We have begun learning how to read and notate the music. However, a frequent occurrence in my room that we are interrupted by the words "Miss! My batteries died!"
In a given month, we can go through anywhere from 12-24 batteries to power our pianos.
As our school has a high free lunch rate, this is not cost effective for my classroom. While we do recycle the used batteries, it is also not environmentally friendly. We would like power cords to use with our pianos in class. This will allow for less interruption in instruction and engagement in the music room.
