Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach inner city 10th grade students, 25% of whom have special needs and 70% of whom are eligible for free lunch. Our school is a progressive, holistic environment in which writing and communicating thoughts, feelings, and especially dreams are a significant part of their emotional literacy.

Our city's school system was just ordered to cut budgets and our supply requests have been denied or frozen. This puts our particular students who often can't afford basic supplies at a greater disadvantage. One of the foundational concepts of learning to read English in a deep, significant way is to understand hidden meanings and recognize symbols. Nothing can teach them this as well as their own dreams, which are great resources for them to explore.

Composition books are crucial because of the personal nature of the writing. Loose leaf doesn't fly or offer the personal psychological safety zone for them to write about their subconscious feelings.

Please help buy these simple supplies so our students can enrich their abilities to recognize that their dreams are no different than Cervantes or Shakespeare or Toni Morrison's.
