My students are 9th graders in a 50-year old school in Atlanta. It's a very diverse mix of of students from all different socioeconomic statuses and family types. Although they're too young to have after school jobs, many of them help their families with work or childcare.
Like many high schoolers, my students are not inherently excited about reading.
I'm trying to incorporate more fun activities to make reading interactive. I also believe in student choice in novels, and I'm trying to expand on my classroom library.
My Project
One of the ways I engage the students in reading is having them pull details from the text and cast famous actors as the characters, and I'd love to put those around the class for a whole-class text.
I'm integrating more technology into the classroom, and I would like to be able to print in color to put things around the classroom.
At my school, teachers have access to printers, but they're black and white only, and my classroom has a more colorful, cheerful vibe.
Plus, there's only one printer per teacher's lounge, and if it's not broken, there's usually a long line for it, and if I just need to print off a couple pages so a student can re-take a quiz or make up a missing assignment or something, it can be really frustrating.
