Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. A large portion of my school's population come from poverty-stricken homes, poverty is their everyday dark cloud. They are kids with hopes and dreams of making their lives better and bettering the future of their families. They deserve a chance to have hope. That hope begins with giving them a voice. They bring their suggestions to us and we listen. We do whatever it takes to help them find success in school and life. It is our hope that their many successes in school translate into finding a better lives for themselves and their families.
This project spreads awareness about various issues affecting humanity. Buttons are probably one of the cheapest forms of marketing. This same idea can be applied to spreading awareness about various issues affecting our students and communities.
Breast cancer awareness month was my students' first introduction at creating awareness in our school building. Students were excited to work in teams to design buttons and punch buttons to spread awareness for breast cancer. Students donated the buttons to our annual Breast Cancer Walk. They created posters to help raise money by selling the buttons for 2 for $1.00. This community service they provided sparked their spirit to continue raising awareness about other issues. As of now, they have a laundry list of buttons they would like to create. This project will allow more students to design and punch buttons, which allows for more humanities topics to be tackled in our middle school.
In Their Own Words
We are making buttons for breast cancer awareness. We probably made about 200 buttons. We gave them to our classmates and donated the rest to raise money for the cause. We hope to create a lot of buttons for other topics. So far, we want to make more buttons for: bullying, Pennies for Patients, March of Dimes, eating disorders, holidays, Camp Half-Blood, cancer, LGBTQ awareness, and other topics students tell us about.
Students have been coming to us for new ideas. We are working together in small groups to make buttons. We show other groups what they need to do, and how to get it done. So far we have shown many students how to design buttons on the computer. Then we showed students how to use the machine. After completing the buttons, we went into our school community (in the building, schoolyard and lunchroom) to help raise money to donate for breast cancer. We want to do this for other causes to help students in our school and our community.
This project is important because there are so many things that are hard for kids our age. We want to be the voice of students by making buttons to spread awareness. Other kids need to know they are not alone and we all go through tough times. These buttons will unite us and help us. There are so many problems in the world. Our project will help everyone that has a button or sees our buttons to see that there is hope and we always have to keep helping each other to get through tough times.
