Buttons are a fun and creative way for my students to express their learning across the curriculum. The buttons will be worn with pride, and I am excited to see how they will express their learning.
Second grade is a great age.
My students are ready to absorb the new information that is given to them, and they are not afraid to try something new. My students love to ask why and then work to discover the answer. Their imaginations know no bounds. They enjoy creating with their hands, and they enjoy sharing their work with each other. Since their final product will be a button, they will be able to display their work on their backpack and each time we do a project, they will be able to add another badge of honor to their backpacks.
My Project
I am asking for a button maker to use in the classroom. My students will meet the creativity standards by integrating art across the curriculum and creating something new in the process. Multiple learning styles will be addresses as there is no wrong way to make a button. Students can use pictures or words to express their learning.
One of our projects will be reading badges. Students will use their critical thinking skills to create badges that express the personalities of the main characters in our reading stories. To do this, students will need to synthesize what they know about the character, question what to emphasize, and evaluate their final product. Students will collaborate to make a list of important character traits, create their own button, and share their final product in a small group where their peers can ask about the final design. We will also make buttons in science, math, and social studies. Buttons are a novel way for students to creatively share their learning.
I am so excited about the potential of this project.
This project gives my students a chance to creatively display what they learn, and to wear their knowledge with pride. Having these materials in the hands of my students would be amazing. I am hoping that with the help of the Lily Sarah Grace fund, and other generous donors, that I can do just!
