Help me give my students hands-on experiences with understanding the importance of the painted lady butterfly as pollinators and their delicate life cycle.
The students in my school are very bright and their parents are very supportive. The students come ready to learn because their parents work hard to provide them with most of the materials they need. Roughly 15% of the students at my school have free or reduced-price lunch. As northern Virginia becomes more metropolitan, that number is steadily increasing.
Many students have been blessed with enriching educational experiences outside of school, while some only have their public school to experience enrichment.
I want to provide every student, regardless of race, background, or income with hands-on experiences and life skills that they will remember throughout their lives.
My Project
These materials will have students appreciate the fragile yet vital role of butterflies in our ecosystems. Students will watch the butterflies grow throughout their life cycle, gaining a better understanding of how growth and change occur in every part of life.
Students will be able to monitor the growth of larva, observe how the caterpillar becomes a chrysalis, and watch the colors of the butterfly wings shine through as it is about to emerge.
Recognizing this vastly different life cycle will help students understand that there are many kinds of living things; that all have a different life cycle to go through.
