Ms. Guidera from Baltimore MD is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a butterfly nursery, butterfly life cycle library, and caterpillars so they can watch the changes that occur during a butterflies life cycle, life cycle bulletin board materials, and a text on science experiments using everyday materials.

Hello! I am a first grade teacher at an inner city school in Maryland. It is a Title 1 school. I currently have 20 students in my classroom all of whom are blossoming before my eyes. My students are very hard workers and enjoy learning science through hands-on activities and experiments.
In the spring my class begins a unit on Life Science focusing on plants and life cycles as well as taking care of our environment. Every year students get excited about being able to grow there own plant and are in charge of taking care of it. They measure its growth and learn about what plants need to survive. These lessons are so enjoyable because they allow the class to work with hands on activities and because they enjoy them so much they are able to retain the information learned and develop their science vocabulary. I would like to be able to do something similar with life cycles. The obstacle I am facing is that I do not have hands on activities to teach life cycles. In past years I have taught life cycles through literature and science textbooks. I would have my students sequence pictures from different stages of several animals lives. This year I would like to continue to use those materials but add an activity that will really peak their interest.
I am requesting butterfly nets and coupons for caterpillars so that this spring my class can see first hand what they will read about in those books. My students can observe the stages of the butterflies life and record what they see in their science journals. This will allow my students to engage in this activity just as much as the plant activities we do.
This experiment will cause so much excitement for learning in my classroom. Your donation can help inspire my students and help create a life long love of science ans possibly a few scientists themselves!
