My students need a Butterflies in the Classroom Kit to study butterflies in our classroom and a Monarch Migration Station to attract and study butterflies outside our window.
We are a fourth grade team of 57 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA from a 4-6 building. Being a fourth grader is tough work as it is the first year with many new faces all combining from the district's five primary schools. The students love having their own lockers (with locks!) and a bit more freedom in the bigger school. We love to read, problem solve, and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.
My Project
Students need to learn the importance of butterflies to our ecosystem. They are important pollinators of our fruits and vegetables, and a great example of of migrating insect.
With this project, students will be able to study butterflies in and out of our classroom.
With the Butterflies in our Classroom Kit, students will be able to observe the Painted Lady Butterfly and its life cycle beginning at the larvae stage. The life cycle magnets and figures will be a hands-on way to see and understand the butterfly life cycle.
Our classroom faces a courtyard which would make the perfect home for the Monarch Migration Station. Students will be able to plant butterfly friendly plants and study the Painted Lady Butterflies we raised in class in a more natural habitat. The plants will continue to attract and hopefully host future generations of butterflies to study for years to come.
