My students need a butterfly refill kit and a display cage to encourage students to question and find answers about our environment through the scientific process.
Raising butterflies is a wonderful way to nurture children's respect for nature. To be able to have an eyes-on experience of watching butterflies emerge and live in a natural habitat by using the butterfly cage in the classroom would be bringing nature to life before their very eyes.
I teach fourth grade in a rural community where most of my students come from very diverse backgrounds.
Most of my students receive free lunch and a growing number of students are homeless.
My children are very eager to learn all they can about science. They come to my class everyday with questions, "What experiment are we going to do today?" They are like sponges soaking up everything I put before them.
To be able to bring science to life in my classroom would be an experience my children would not soon forget. Imagine having a butterfly habitat that children could observe and study even through the winter months.
These children come from disadvantaged backgrounds but I never want them to feel disadvantaged when it comes to their education.
My Project
My children will be able to witness the emerging of a butterfly from beginning to end. With the butterfly display cage my children will be able to observe and study the life and habitat of a butterfly until we release them to the outdoors.
My children will experience the wonders of nature right in their own classroom with the butterflies living in their habitat right in the classroom.
To bring nature right in the classroom is an experience my children will not soon forget and who knows what this will inspire them to do.
We may be creating the next Jeff Gorwin or Bill Nye. You never know!
