Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an urban area surrounded by cement, cars, factories, liquor stores, and old buildings. They come from low-income families and many don't travel out of our mid-sized city. My students are mostly Hispanic, but also African-American and Caucasian.
Most of their parents did not attend college or even complete high school, but they want the best for their children.
They are just trying to get by, supporting their kids in the ways they know how. They count on the school to educate their children and provide them with experiences that will help them do better in life.
My Project
This kit will show my students the life cycle of a butterfly up close and personal. The kit comes with a large pavilion and all the supplies needed to cultivate a live butterfly.
Students will have all of the necessary supplies to raise their very own butterfly and observe a complete metamorphosis.
This process takes about 3 weeks. Students will place the caterpillar larvae into a small cup with food. The caterpillars will eat the food and grow into chrysalides. During this time, they will spin silk and produce a pad which will stick to the top of their cup. Once the chrysalides are fully formed, they will be transferred from the cup to the pavilion, or habitat.
After 7-10 days, butterflies emerge from the chrysalide. The butterflies will eat a mixture of water and sugar. The butterflies sip the mixture with their proboscises.
Last, the butterflies will be released into their natural environment!
My students have very little exposure to the natural world, but are so intrigued by its processes. This project will give them an experience with nature - with living things and the miracle of a life cycle. It will open their minds to the natural world that someday may be within their reach.
