Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I developed a love for school as a young child, and I want to instill that same desire for learning within our students! I am an Instructional Specialist in an urban, inner-city school. Our school is filled with children who are four years old up to eleven years old who are very eager to learn.
I teach at a school building that houses pre-k through grade five, and houses approximately 800 students.
They come from a neighborhood that provides them with many challenges, but when they come to school they are so happy to be there!
My Project
We will be studying how to use our five senses to make observations about the world around us. What better way to learn about caterpillars and butterflies?! The students love learning about the world around them, and they have so many questions! I want to inspire their love for learning and investigation by allowing them to learn how caterpillars grow into butterflies. They will learn so much through this process, and not only will we use our senses (except taste of course!) but we will be able to incorporate reading, writing, the arts, and have so much fun while doing it!
The butterfly kits allow the students in 6 different first grade classrooms have "their own" caterpillars which they feed, watch grow, see attach to the top of the container, then we move them to the butterfly watch where they form their chrysalis!
The students then wait patiently while learning about life cycles, and the changes happening within the chrysalis. When "their butterfly" finally emerges they are so smart about the process and so excited to see it happen first hand! We then celebrate with a butterfly release party, after studying and observing our butterflies for a few days.
This is a wonderful experience for our first graders that they will always remember. I am hopeful that we can make this happen for them this Spring!
