I teach a gifted first grade class at P.S. 326 in Brooklyn, New York. P.S. 326 is an Early Elementary School consisting of one pre-kindergarten, 6 kindergarten and 7 first grade classes. Many of our students are English Language Learners and 80% of our children receive free lunch.
My students will be doing a unit on the life cycles of insects and tadpoles this spring. First graders are fascinated by the way caterpillars metamorphose into butterflies. They love to learn about the ladybug larvae turning into ladybird beetles. They are amazed about how swimming tadpoles can turn into hopping frogs.
This year I would like to make our frog and insect unit really exciting. I am asking you to please donate a ladybug larvae, caterpillars and tadpole hatching kit and some books to help make our life cycle unit more interesting and hands-on. The materials will give us an exciting real-life look at these insects and amphibians and let us watch them in action. The nurseries will let us watch caterpillars change into butterflies, tadpoles to frogs and larvae to ladybugs. We can celebrate at the end of our unit with an insect release!
