I have a class with young children with multiple disabilities. They are eager learners and love to come to school. We try to provide opportunities to learn that enable our special students to have "hands on" experiences. They benefit from multi- sensory materials and activities. This proposal would involve a great science unit on caterpillars and butterflies. We would organize a trip to visit the butterfly exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. Here the students would see many beautiful butterflies right up close in a special house just for butterflies. We would visit Central Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and look for butterflies and caterpillars. We would read books about butterflies such as the classic story for children, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." We would use butterfly nurseries that demonstrate how caterpillars turn into butterflies. I think that this unit would be a wonderful learning experience for my special students. The culminating event would be a butterfly celebration where we let the butterflies go free. We could invite lots of our school friends and the principal and demonstrate all we have learned. We could serve refreshments like butterfly cookies that we would make in class for the celebration. Although this is a simple unit, it would provide a lot of fun and learning for our class. It would be awesome to have these wonderful resources to help us accomplish this with our special kids.
