Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are young children, ages 8-10 years old, with Intellectual Disabilities attending a Special Day Program in a general education elementary school located in a high poverty community. Resources are limited, and specialized equipment and materials are expensive.
We need high-interest materials to help these students engage in learning how to share and take turns, as well as reinforcing functional math skills.
Learning new skills is especially difficult for children who have a short attention span and lack internal motivation to persevere. My students need multiple opportunities to learn and practice basic skills every day.
My Project
Not long ago, my students thought that tadpoles turned into cows! This inspired me to get a frog habitat so they could see what happened to the tadpole as it advanced through the stages of its life cycle.
My students need a butterfly and ladybug kit and magnifiers so they can observe the stages of metamorphosis as we learn about plants and insects.
They don't have many opportunities to see butterflies or ladybugs, let alone watch how they evolve.
We need hands-on experiences for my students to remember they things they learn. What could be more exciting than to observe the stages of metamorphosis?
