Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever raised a butterfly from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly? It is an unforgettable experience of wonder, excitement, and learning as children explore the life cycle of these beautiful insects. I am requesting a set of classroom caterpillars that will develop and hatch before our eyes! In addition to watching the butterflies develop, I am requesting the inflatable butterfly life cycle and a series of 2nd grade butterfly books so that my students will be able to get the most out of this hands-on project.
My 2nd graders love science---whether it's looking at rocks through magnifying glasses or planting marigolds on the windowsill. Raising butterflies is a unique, hands-on opportunity to watch the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. After weeks of observation, the butterflies will hatch and we'll study them a little bit longer before the bittersweet release in Central Park. This activity remains one of the best projects I have ever done as a teacher. I would love a chance to share this experience with my students once again!
