But Why?: A Scientific Partnership between 5th grade & PK
My students need 6 materials to enrich their studies of environmental science through a PreK and Grade 5 partnership; to include composting, seed germination & gardening.
Being able to question, problem solve and analyze are essential life-long skills. Due to the heavy focus on literacy and math, these scientific skills often take a back seat. Our challenge is to increase emphasis on science in a unique, creative and enthusiastic manner.
Our students attend a diverse public elementary school of 900+ children.
Our PreK program is free to children who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch and/or have special needs. The targeted 5th grade students are typically performing below grade level in math and/or reading. They are invited to join the partnership based on interest and teacher recommendation. The students will work together on a weekly basis as part of a special science club during school hours.
My Project
The resources and activities will revolve around the cycle of plant life. The students will start by tending to and learning about the earthworm garden. At the same time, the students will learn about composting and use the composting kit to start their own compost pile. The earthworms will be added to the mix! The students will also spend time learning and hypothesizing about seed germination and plant growth. Several resources are included on our list, such as the Hydroponic Dome, a variety of seeds, a planting kit and gardening tools. Ultimately, the plants will be transplanted from the classroom garden to an outdoor plot, including soil from our own compost! During this time, the students will be given opportunities to use new scientific vocabulary, data collection tools, and enhance critical thinking skills while making new friends!
This hands-on project will give our students the opportunity and resources to explore science in a motivating and inspirational way.
The partnership between grades will foster a life-time appreciation for the environment and the scientific process. The long-term goal for this project is to highlight a new science topic each semester, establishing a tradition of collaboration between PreK and 5th grade students.
