Ever read a book you didn't really get? I want to make sure that there will be enough interesting books in our classroom library so that every single child, regardless of their reading level, can find a 'just right' book.
Our students come from a diverse array of backgrounds.
With 40% of our school's students being below the poverty level, every chance we get to assist them learn effectively is an opportunity to assure their future success. Our phenomenal class of 30 ESOL students comes from a variety of cultures. Students in our class speak Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, German, and Korean at home, and some students come to our school without knowing a single word in English. These impoverished kids who have a native language other than English are the most likely to drop out before graduating from high school, unless we help them now.
My Project
Although I have personally bought hundreds of books for my classroom library, they are all at the fourth grade reading level or higher, leaving my lower level readers without a 'just right' book. I want to get these books to provide an opportunity for my lower level students to enjoy reading by finding interesting and educational books in our library. The books I have selected cover a variety of topics, including social studies, science, and language arts, as well as some classics that are easy reads. I love using the Amelia Bedelia books to help my ESOL students understand idioms. By expanding our library with these books, you will help our students have a wide variety of options in their daily reading.
The books you donate to our classroom will make our library complete by including first through twelfth grade books.
