My Students

The range of interests, abilities, and personalities in a kindergarten classroom is as varied and as interesting as a bag of trail mix. Some students come in counting and writing their name, while others cannot yet recognize letters. Despite the wide range of abilities, they all have one thing in common: they all learn best by creating, building, and exploring.

I teach at a rural, Title I school that's been slowly pushing forward in the direction of STEAM and incorporating technology use.

These young learners are discovering how to be inventive thinkers with interests in using technology to help them create, innovate, and problem solve. Students in my class understand that they are part of a classroom family. Together, we learn to celebrate each other's differences, to cheer on peers, and to be role models to others.

My Project

"But what if the big bad wolf was... nice? Would that change the story?" This was a discussion I had with my students the other day while we were exploring the story, The Three Little Pigs. Our class was learning about story-telling elements and how each description of each character matters when telling the story, and I couldn't help but think, "If only I had a copy of this particular book to share with them."

Our school adopted a new curriculum this year, and because each week is new content for me as a teacher, I am still figuring out what additional materials I need to "flesh out" these lessons.

Our class focuses on one book per week. And I love tying in other stories or similar adaptations to expand their knowledge of these stories. For example, there are many different adaptations to The Three Little Pigs, and in one of them, the world isn't so Big and Bad! Having these books donated to my classroom would allow me to expand our classroom library in a way that directly aligns with the stories that I am currently teaching.
