Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"There is no one at home to read to me at night." I have heard it in September and in June. I have heard it first grade and fifth grade. It is not an excuse, it is just the way it is. Most parents of students in my school just can't read in English to their child. This predicament inhibits my students' reading, writing and language development. They struggle with fluency and inflection in their reading. They barely finish standardized tests. They long to hear the story "just one more time." They, like me, wish there was a little more time each day. They'll sit inches from a classmate in hungry anticipation while a book is being read aloud. They discuss characters and plot with classmates, preparing post-its for conversation. They'll hang on every word you give them but they can't transfer the read aloud excitement and motivation home. They need more opportunities to listen to rich literature. This is where you might be able to help us! I have the cassette recorder and headphones ready. I also have three old cassette walkmans that are ready to be loaned home. I just don't have the books on tape. I attend grad class three nights a week and scarcely have the chance to get to the NYPublic Library while it is still open. I can't fit many more cassettes and books into my backpack or pay another overdue fee. We need a reliable listening center which fosters listening, reading, conversation and writing. We want to tell you about these books! So, I am not asking for anything huge. I am asking for a little help to start a classroom listening center filled with rich literature with books the teacher heard again and again as a child, like Where The Wild Things Are and Curious George, and books that every child should hear read to them at least once! Any contribution you can make to this proposal will be helpful. The library is recyclable for years to come. Thank you for reading!
