My district is made up of students who are living below the poverty rate. They come to school with very little outside of the classroom experiences. They are eager to learn and have a thirst for new knowledge. I try to provide them with as many positive experiences as possible that will broaden their horizons and show them what life is outside of their community. I am hoping that by giving them a positive start to their education, they will continue their learning for a long time.
The winter months in my district are too cold for us to get outside for recess. Most months, we only make it outside one or two days. When we have to stay inside for recess students need something to do. I have tried having them watch movies or play games, but they want to create. They want to build cities with the requested Legos. My class this year loves the challenge of puzzles. I currently have three puzzles and they keep doing them over and over, so we need more. Students love to color and draw and need more coloring books than I can keep them supplied with. Students are best behaved when they are entertained. They need a variety of activities to choose from.
