My students need flexible seating options in the classroom to provide their least restrictive environment for learning. This will enhance their engagement, creativity, and focus.
I happen to teach kindergarten, and often people think that I am a little crazy, however I can honestly say that kindergarten is the best kept secret in all of education. I get to spend my day with students who are learning not only how to read, but how to "do" school. Everyday they add to their knowledge banks. Everyday they come excited to learn. Everyday they remind me of why I am a teacher. Everyday they teach me things about life, the world, people, and community.
My student's this year are a kind, thoughtful bunch.
They come from diverse homes and socioeconomic statuses. They all came to kindergarten with a wide range of skills some high and some low, however, my goal this year has been to build foundations and/or add to foundations to make them stronger. They are silly, love a good story read to them, make fantastic connections, and are well on their way to be world changers! They have blossomed with structure, lots of movement, and positive reinforcement. Everyday is awesome with this group of kids!
My Project
Working with primary aged student's for several years, I am seeing the importance of flexible seating options. Kids are full of energy and have a natural need to MOVE. This project is designed to give my students constructive ways to get their wiggles out, give them choices, and create ways to individualize their least restrictive environment for learning.
Some students do great at a table, others thrive sitting on the carpet, some need to stand, and some need to move while they sit.
All of these items will be made available to all my students in hopes of curbing disruptive behavior by providing safe, effective outlets for individual movement while learning.
