Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All my students come from households that qualify them for free lunches where English is a second language for the majority of them. The opportunities for my students to experience the wonder of what is beyond the inner city is limited to what school can provide for them.
My students are enthusiastic, full of energy and wonder about their world and how it works and are always craving the next topic of intrigue.
Asking questions and discovering what is outside the four walls of our classroom is another opportunity to ignite a passion for learning.
My Project
My students crave ways to expand their problem solving skills and opportunities to flex their creative brain muscle! They quickly get bored with traditional paper and pencil reinforcement activities and beg for opportunities where they can move around, build, create, share and respond to what they’re learning. They beg me to take the classroom outside; literally and figuratively.
In my 20+ years of teaching, I’ve noticed that my student’s fine and gross motor skills have dwindled drastically.
STEM based activities like Tinker toys, Marble Runs, Magnetic Tiles and Snowballs will allow them the opportunities to engage all their muscles and give them built in incentive to plan, write draw and share what they will and have created!
With these materials I will be able to take them beyond paper and pencil. I will be able to take them outside the four walls of our classroom and I will be able to give them opportunities to do what kids know how to do best-disguise learning as play!
