Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a bilingual Pre-kindergarten classroom. We are located in Pasadena, Texas, in an industrial suburb of Houston, Texas. My students are English Language Learners in a Title I school. In our school, approximately ninety-five percent of students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students are bright and eager to learn. They are active learners and very curious about the world around them. Quality educational experiences at this early learning stage are crucial to academic success later in each child’s lifelong learning journey.
My Project
The double-sided dry-erase boards will be an excellent resource for my students to practice their fine motor skills, develop literacy concepts and have fun writing. Developing literacy concepts is probably the most important first step in forming good readers. Good readers enjoy reading and being read to. They learn to interact in a rewarding way with the printed word. I have requested The Language and Literacy Skills Kit to supplement our limited literacy resources. The colorful pictures come complete with descriptive words. The students will be able to use the magnetic letters to reproduce the words that describe each picture. This will reinforce letter/sound recognition, word recognition and grant my students sufficient literacy success to boost their self-esteem and confidence in their own learning capabilities. The Snap 'N Learn Alphabet Alligators teach upper and lower case letter matching. While my students will use mostly lower case letters for their purposes, it is crucial that they be able to match the upper and lower case letters and begin to understand basic conventions of writing such as using capital letters for names and to begin sentences. The Magnetic Table Top Pocket Chart is for teacher-led instruction and independent practice. My students will enjoy practicing their new skills frequently with one another using the pocket chart after I model each new skill for them.
