Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As my first year as a teacher comes to a close, I have am beginning plans to make next year even better. One major issue rises to the top: ORGANIZATION!
First graders are busy busy people, and they need all kinds of stuff to get through the day. Math books, reading journals, writing folders are among the multitude of essentials, and the scramble to find all of these materials throughout the day is an immense, time-taking challenge.
I have asked the experts in my district and region for advice, and the best proposal I have received is called \"Chair Bags\". They are most popular in New Zealand where they are readily available, and considered a school-supply staple. Made from canvas, they slip over the back of a student\'s chair and create a sturdy personal pocket that can hold all kinds of essentials. Luckily for me, a nice lady in Memphis is producing these wonder-tools. Unluckily for me, my teacher\'s choice budget would not begin to cover their purchase.
I truly believe the Chair Bags would revolutionize first grade for my students, and should be adopted all over. By reducing the confusion and clutter, the overall student learning time would be increased as students become more efficient with the movements. It also encourages self-sufficiency and an increased responsibility for supplies. Finally, the chair bags are unlike other classroom organisation tools that take up valuable space. Chair Bags utilize a previously neglected classroom space, leaving us with more room to move, play and learn!
Right now, my students have old closets to store their book bags, but our classroom furnishings leave much to be desired. We are a SURR (School Under Restrictive Review) school and none of my students can afford lunch, let alone a Chair Bag. Please let us start the year on a well-organized, productive note!
