We start our day off with a good morning song. The singing "pumps" the students up for learning. These items will help facilitate tactile learning experiences. Tactile skills development are dependent on the development of gross and fine motor skills.
My students are ages 8-13.
They are all non-verbal. Three of my students are blind and two more are visually impaired.
We attend an exceptional school for severely disabled students. Over 90% of our students are on the free lunch program.
Several of the students are wheel chair bound. I only have one student in a wheel chair. Most of the students have multiple disabilities.
Most of our learning is hand-over-hand. Because of their disabilities, most of them are not able to use writing utensils.
The students here are very low functioning. For example, my students can't say their alphabet, write or spell their names and are not potty trained.
My Project
My requested tables will be perfect for small group learning. I am presently using a rectangle shaped table surrounded by desks. This table is used for my wheel chair student and for small group learning. The kidney tables will have a spot for the teachers which allows easy assess to help all students with hand over hand activities. I have to individually explain the lessons or activities to my students. I have five visually impaired students and tactile skills are often used.
My blind students depend on sound and touch. The Shapes & Sounds Box and Stacking Rings And Rattles stackers with sound will be great for them. These materials give me the opportunity to set up tactile interactions.
My favorite saying is "One Day At a Time" anonymous author.
As a teacher of special needs students, I believe that I have to try different things daily until I find out what works. I can't negatively think "I've tried and tried, but they just don't get it". Instead, I believe after trying "One Day At a Time" for several days, eventually I will find a way to reach at least one student. I want only the best for my students. When I see an opportunity to help them, I go all out to make it happen.
