A day in the life of a first grade student...Here's where it gets tricky! I have been given the opportunity to do what I love in a school where my students come to me each day with a different story based on different ethnicity, backgrounds, families and home life. A few common threads that unite them is their love for one another, their love of learning and their boundless energy!
My students show me more love on a daily basis that I ever dreamed possible.
Imagine everyday being greeted with a hug and a smile. That is what I look forward to everyday, but it's also needed to set the tone for their day at school. All of my students have their own unique story with needs that have to be met, through many different personalities and learning styles.
Our school is located in St. Louis, MO. It is a highly diverse school with over 500 students ranging from middle to low socioeconomic status, and twenty countries represented. Reaching the goals of my students is quite challenging, but extremely rewarding!
My Project
Why not start every morning, and throughout the day with high interest activities to foster a love of exploring and learning. It is so important for students to be engaged through high interest activities from the minute they walk in my classroom to the time they leave. What I'm trying to create are bins of activities for students to explore and create independently or with a group on their peers. These bins hopefully will be filled with LEGO pieces, magnetic tiles, magnet wands, lace and trace cards, word cubes and so much more to spark an interest that may lead to a lifelong interest in many subject areas. As a new teacher to first grade I simply don't have the hands-on materials to expose these awesome learners to all that is available through the STEM world and beyond.
Busy brains and busy hands can lead students to wherever their imagination takes them.
With your donation of materials I'll be able to provide my" busy little brains" these exciting, hands-on manipulatives throughout the day. They will be given a chance to collaborate with other students or just use their imagination to build on their own.
